Userscripts: Comprehensive Review of iOS Safari Scripting Extension

by Justin Wasack

Open-source Safari extension enabling users to inject custom JavaScript and CSS code into websites. Ideal for power users seeking browser customization, ad-blocking, and automated web interactions without tracking.

Detailed Review

Userscripts represents a significant advancement for iOS power users seeking to customize their web browsing experience beyond standard Safari capabilities. Developed by Justin Wasack, this open-source extension fills a notable gap in Apple's ecosystem by allowing direct injection of custom JavaScript and CSS code into visited websites. The app operates as a Safari web extension, leveraging iOS's relatively recent support for such functionality while maintaining strict privacy standards with zero user tracking. The core functionality centers around creating, managing, and executing userscripts that can manipulate webpage elements, modify styles, block specific content, or automate interactions. Users can write scripts directly within the app or import existing ones, with support for automatic execution based on URL patterns. The open-source nature provides transparency and allows technical users to verify security implementations, while the absence of analytics or telemetry aligns with privacy-focused browsing practices. Script execution occurs within Safari's extension sandbox, balancing functionality with iOS security constraints. User experience reflects a utilitarian design philosophy focused on functionality rather than visual polish. The interface presents a straightforward script management system where users can create, edit, and organize scripts with basic syntax highlighting. Real-world usage patterns show most users employ the extension for consistent tasks: removing distracting elements from news sites, applying custom dark themes to unsupported websites, automating login sequences, or creating personalized content filters. The extension requires basic JavaScript knowledge, positioning it squarely toward technically proficient users rather than casual browsers. User feedback consistently highlights appreciation for the developer's ethical approach, with multiple reviews specifically praising the absence of tracking and open-source transparency. User 'Hattozo' (March 24, 2025) notes it as 'probably the only app on the App Store that isn't made by a scummy person,' while 'AppleFanboy8' (March 11, 2025) demonstrates practical application for UI theming on Discord and Wikipedia. Some limitations are acknowledged, such as occasional script compatibility issues mentioned by 'Ethan1780ix' (March 27, 2025), which stem from Safari's extension API constraints rather than the app itself. The extension excels in providing unprecedented customization capabilities for iOS Safari while maintaining strong privacy protections. Primary limitations include the requirement for JavaScript proficiency and occasional API restrictions imposed by Apple's ecosystem. Ideal use cases involve technical users seeking to automate repetitive web tasks, modify website appearances, or implement custom content filtering solutions that mainstream extensions don't provide. The completely free model with no monetization strategy raises questions about long-term sustainability, though current implementation remains fully functional without caveats.

Not only is it more Mac like than the competitors, it's fully open source; no funny business going on. Great Not only is it more Mac like than the competitors, it's fully open source; no funny business going on.

I have used a lot of Style / Script apps but this one is the best. The interface and customization options are top-notch but what really makes it so great is the fact that it can sync your styles to iOS!! This is so incredible and the first extension I've ever seen do this well. Absolutely fantastic! Best App for this Reason I have used a lot of Style / Script apps but this one is the best. I write a lot of UserScripts on both Windows and Mac. I've used all the ...Monkey variants on Windows, and of all the UserScript tools I've used on any platorm, this one is the best. It's a bit of Hobson's choice on iOS since the choices are very limited, but I honestly have no idea what I'd want that this tool doesn't have. TamperMonkey really showing it's age these days, very laggy UI– it feels like it hasn't changed much since the firefox 0.9 days (if you remember those days). This extension has a much more appealing icon and design, faster UI and editor, and can sync across iCloud drive easily. Fantastic!
