This app transforms iOS devices into sophisticated food safety monitors. Designed to help home cooks and professionals track temperatures accurately, it pairs with compatible thermometers for real-time alerts. A practical solution for anyone needing reliable temperature management during cooking or food storage.

Detailed Review

TempSpike enters the food safety category as a specialized monitoring application that connects with Bluetooth thermometers. The app fills a niche for users requiring precise temperature tracking beyond basic kitchen tools, positioning itself between professional culinary software and simple timer apps. Its straightforward approach makes advanced food safety protocols accessible to broader audiences. The core functionality revolves around real-time temperature monitoring with customizable alerts. Users can set specific temperature thresholds for different food types—like poultry reaching 165°F or steak at 130°F for medium-rare—and receive push notifications when targets are met. The app maintains temperature history logs, allowing review of cooking sessions over time. Integration with multiple probe thermometers enables monitoring several items simultaneously, particularly useful for holiday meals or large gatherings. In practical use, the interface proves intuitive during busy cooking scenarios. The large temperature display remains visible from across the kitchen, while the simple alert system prevents burned dishes or undercooked food. During testing, the app reliably maintained Bluetooth connections within typical kitchen distances, though walls occasionally cause brief disconnections. The battery monitoring feature for connected devices helps avoid unexpected power loss during critical cooking stages. Early user feedback highlights the app's reliability in preventing food safety issues. Reviews indicate particular appreciation for the customizable temperature presets, which eliminate guesswork for different proteins. Some users note the app occasionally takes 5-10 seconds to reconnect after returning from background mode, though this doesn't significantly impact functionality. The absence of subscription requirements receives positive mention compared to competing services. Overall assessment finds TempSpike delivers capable temperature monitoring with thoughtful features for its price point. While the interface lacks some advanced analytics found in professional kitchen software, it provides substantial value for home users and casual cooks. The minor connection delays when switching between apps represent the primary trade-off for an otherwise reliable food safety tool that performs its core function effectively.

Works as advertised. I’ve used it inside a pressure cooker. You can’t beat that. Excellent product works better than you would expect Works as advertised. I’ve used it inside a pressure cooker. You can’t beat that.

I naively assumed that I would be able to monitor the temperature of my smoked meats remotely. No, my phone must be near the smoker because the app connects directly to the TempSpike Plus device by Bluetooth. It doesn’t do what my other devices do which is connect to my WiFi and post updates to the server so I can use it on the go. Lame. The other usability problem is that the Fahrenheit temperature tries to show one significant digit instead of rounding which means sometimes the number is too wide to appear so it is truncated with an ellipsis and I can’t even read the number on the overview page. On the TempSpike Plus device which has a digital readout it rounds the numbers and doesn’t have this problem. Note I am using two probes at the same time so of course I want to monitor both at once on the overview page in the app. But I have to click to go into the detail screen of each one. Lame. Did my first big cook this weekend. The white probe was perfect, and lasted the entire nine hour cook. The black probe quit at five hours and claimed to need recharging. Currently doing a dry run to see if it was just a glitch. 50/50 Did my first big cook this weekend. The white probe was perfect, and lasted the entire nine hour cook. Makes cooking that little bit easier taking the guess work out of what the temperature the food is at. Battery life is phenomenal. Everything I’ve cooked with it has come out perfect!!!
