Review: Tempest Weather App for iOS - More Than Just a Companion

This app serves as the primary interface for the Tempest personal weather station, delivering highly localized data and forecasts. If you need precise, real-time weather conditions from your own backyard alongside broader regional data, this platform provides a comprehensive solution. It’s particularly valuable for outdoor enthusiasts, gardeners, and anyone invested in microclimate monitoring.

Detailed Review

The Tempest Weather app, developed by WeatherFlow, functions as both a remote monitor for the proprietary Tempest hardware station and a standalone weather application. Its market position is distinct, catering to users who invest in a specific ecosystem for granular, personalized weather data rather than those seeking a generic forecast. This dual-purpose nature defines its strengths and shapes user expectations, positioning it as a specialized tool within the broader weather app category. Core functionality revolves around displaying a dense array of meteorological metrics. Users can access real-time readings for temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, UV index, solar radiation, and rainfall—all sourced directly from their installed station. The app also provides detailed forecasts, lightning strike detection alerts, and historical data charts. A significant addition, frequently noted in user feedback, is the integration of animated radar maps, which addresses a previous gap in its offering and allows for visual storm tracking. In practical use, the app excels at providing a dashboard for hyper-local conditions. For a runner checking if a passing shower is imminent or a gardener deciding whether to water, the data specificity is a key advantage. The interface is generally clean, prioritizing current conditions and forecasts, with deeper data available through taps and swipes. The recent restoration of iOS widgets is a noted improvement, allowing for at-a-glance information directly on the home screen. However, the experience is inherently tied to owning the hardware; while the app can provide forecasts for any location, its premier feature—the personal station data—is geographically fixed. User reviews consistently highlight several trends. Praise centers on the station's installation ease, data accuracy verified against professional sources, and the value of the integrated radar. Many describe it as their primary weather source. Critiques and desires for improvement are also evident. Some users report occasional bugs with location services or map errors. There is also expressed interest in broader smart home integration, such as official Google Assistant support, and more granular interface customization, though one review notes that display customization is possible with guidance from support. Overall, the Tempest Weather app is a highly effective portal for a dedicated hardware system. Its main limitation is its dependency on that hardware for its full potential. As a standalone weather app, it is competent, with good forecasts and radar, but faces stiff competition. For Tempest station owners, however, it is an indispensable companion that turns raw environmental data into actionable insight, despite minor interface quirks and integration wishes that some users express.

Key Features

  • Hyper-Local Station Data: Displays real-time weather metrics from a user's personal Tempest station, providing accuracy for a specific property rather than a general area.
  • Integrated Radar Maps: Offers animated weather radar for visual storm tracking, a feature added after user demand and frequently mentioned in positive reviews.
  • Lightning Detection Network: Alerts users to nearby lightning strikes, a critical safety feature for outdoor activities and planning.
  • Customizable iOS Widgets: Allows users to place glanceable weather data from their station directly on their iPhone's home screen for instant access.
  • Detailed Historical Charts: Provides access to graphs of past weather data, useful for tracking trends in temperature, rainfall, and wind over time.
  • Multi-Location Forecasts: While anchored to a home station, the app can still generate detailed forecasts for any other location a user needs to check.

I looked for a quality weather station for a long time until a friend told me about the Tempest. I am so happy with this station, it is very easy on the eye, super easy to physically install and the software was a total breeze. The Tempest app works perfect not only at home but while away from home it will give you a forecast for the location you are at. Thanks for a great product. 5 stars not enough I looked for a quality weather station for a long time until a friend told me about the Tempest. This system is amazing and the app is really easy to get good quality data. I am working to get this added to the MyRadar app, that can be integrated with my system. Because I live in a hilly region, the weather does not follow current big radar systems, and with this system integrated into MyRadar, I'll be able to better prepare for weather. Thank you!
