For shooters seeking to hone skills without live ammunition, the Strikeman app provides a practical dry fire training platform. It uses laser cartridges compatible with various calibers to offer realistic target practice at home. This tool is particularly useful for beginners and experienced owners alike, focusing on fundamentals like grip and trigger control.

Detailed Review

Developed by Strikeman USA, Inc., the Strikeman app is a mobile solution for firearm training that leverages laser cartridges to simulate shooting scenarios. Positioned in the sports category, it addresses a growing demand for cost-effective and accessible practice methods, especially as ammunition prices remain high. The app requires users to pair it with Strikeman's proprietary laser cartridges, which are available in calibers such as 9mm, .40 cal, and .38 special. This setup allows for safe, repetition-based training in any indoor environment, making it a notable option in the niche of digital shooting aids. Core functionality centers on session-based training where users aim at physical targets captured via the phone's camera. The app detects laser hits in real-time, providing immediate feedback on accuracy through on-screen scoring. Features include customizable courses of fire, where shooters can design drills for timed or precision exercises, and a data review system that logs past sessions for progress tracking. Compatibility with multiple firearm models adds versatility, though the need to manually rack the slide after each shot is inherent to the dry fire process. This action, while sometimes cited as tedious, doubles as practice for weapon manipulation and resetting stance. In real-world use, the app is praised for its straightforward setup, often taking minutes to calibrate with a target placed at distances like 7 or 15 yards. Users report that the phone camera reliably recognizes targets even at slight angles, reducing frustration during sessions. For instance, a homeowner might use it for 15-minute daily drills to maintain proficiency for self-defense scenarios, or a competitive shooter could integrate it to refine sight alignment without range fees. However, the experience lacks physical recoil, which limits its realism for follow-up shot training. Some minor interface quirks, such as a limited selection of free targets, are noted but don't significantly hinder functionality. User feedback trends highlight consistent satisfaction, reflected in its 4.15-star rating. Reviews indicate that beginners value the guided practice for building confidence, while seasoned owners appreciate the ability to break in new firearms or save on expensive ammunition. Specific examples include users practicing with .40 cal handguns to overcome stiffness or seniors using it to familiarize themselves with weapon handling in a low-pressure setting. Criticisms are minor but present; for example, some users desire a 'free shoot' mode without session limits, and occasional calibration issues where shots appear offset, though this may relate to individual sight adjustments rather than app flaws. Overall, the Strikeman app delivers a reliable and affordable training tool that excels in fundamental skill development. Its limitations, such as the absence of recoil simulation and the repetitive slide racking, are trade-offs for convenience and cost savings. For those committed to regular practice without frequent range visits, it serves as a effective supplement to live fire training, though it shouldn't replace it entirely for advanced scenarios.

Key Features

  • Laser Cartridge Compatibility: Works with Strikeman-brand laser cartridges in calibers like 9mm and .40 cal, projecting a beam for the phone's camera to detect shot placement on targets.
  • Customizable Training Drills: Allows users to create and save multiple courses of fire, enabling varied practice sessions for speed, accuracy, or defensive scenarios.
  • Performance Data Tracking: Logs shot history and session results, providing quick review options to monitor improvements in grouping and consistency over time.
  • Easy Camera-Based Setup: Uses the iPhone's camera to align with physical targets, with recognition that functions reliably even when the phone is placed at angles.
  • Home-Friendly Dry Fire Practice: Enables safe, ammunition-free training in indoor spaces, ideal for daily short sessions to maintain or build shooting fundamentals.
  • Muscle Memory Reinforcement: Requires manual slide racking after each shot, which users report helps ingrain proper handling techniques and reset routines.

Really good for a beginner like me. I wish there was actual recoil so it would feel more real but that can’t be controlled with that cartridge. Also please let us have a free shooting option where instead of choosing a session we shoot till we stop. But overall I really like the app Good but would love more free target options Really good for a beginner like me. I’ve used the app with both a 9mm and .40 cal laser cartridge. My .40 cal handgun is really stiff even after at least 1000 rounds down range. I’ve used the Strikeman app to continue breaking it in when I don’t have time to go to the range, especially since .40 cal ammo is so expensive right now. Set up each time I go to shoot is pretty easy, and it recognizes the target both when the phone is directly in line and when it’s at a slight angle. It is annoying to have to rack the slide back each time I shoot, but I keep telling myself that it’s not only continuing to break it in but that it’s also great to practice muscle memory when my hands reset so that I’m continually resetting it at the right angle. It seems that the app hits to the right of where I’m aiming, but I also may need to adjust my sights, and I haven’t done enough comparison to the range at the same distances to determine which is the issue. Regardless, I’m glad I finally pulled the trigger on the purchase so I can practice more often.
