This app provides detailed GPS-based tracking for skiers and snowboarders. For anyone who wants to quantify a day on the mountain, it records runs, speed, vertical descent, and creates a visual map of the entire session. A solid choice for enthusiasts looking to analyze and share their performance metrics.

Detailed Review

Ski Tracks serves as a dedicated digital logbook for winter sports, using a device's GPS to record the intricacies of a day on the slopes. Positioned in a niche of sports-specific tracking utilities, it distinguishes itself from general fitness apps by focusing on metrics relevant to alpine activities, such as vertical descent and lift lines. Its longstanding presence in the app store suggests a proven utility for a dedicated user base, though it operates in a field with increasing competition from built-in watchOS and Wear OS features. The core functionality hinges on precise GPS logging to break down a ski day into individual runs. The app automatically detects lift rides and descents, compiling data on maximum and average speed, total distance, and altitude changes. Beyond raw numbers, it generates a color-coded trail map overlaid on satellite imagery, with speed indicated by hue. One of its signature features is the 3D flight-replay mode, which animates the day's path over terrain models. The app also logs environmental data like temperature and allows for manual note-taking and photo attachment for each session. In real-world usage, the experience is defined by its set-it-and-forget-it simplicity. Users typically start a session at the base lodge and let it run throughout the day, with the phone safely stowed in a pocket. Battery consumption is a noted consideration, as continuous GPS logging can be demanding, making a portable power bank a recommended companion for full-day outings. The interface for reviewing past sessions is straightforward, presenting a dashboard of key stats and the interactive map. Exporting data for sharing on social platforms or with friends is a streamlined process, supporting the app's social-competitive angle. While no specific reviews are available for this version, analysis of historical feedback for the app indicates consistent praise for its accuracy and the depth of data provided. Users often highlight the satisfaction of reviewing the detailed map and the motivation derived from tracking personal speed records. Common points of criticism from past discussions occasionally mention rare GPS drift in densely treed areas or deep valleys, which is a limitation of consumer-grade GPS technology rather than the app itself. Some users have also expressed a desire for more granular analysis tools within the app, such as comparing specific runs across different days. Overall, Ski Tracks delivers a focused and reliable service for its intended purpose. Its strengths lie in its specialized metrics, intuitive visualizations, and passive tracking. The main limitations are tied to hardware constraints—GPS accuracy and battery life—which are largely outside the app's direct control. For skiers and boarders who are data-curious but not served by their smartwatch ecosystem, this app remains a worthwhile and proven tool, albeit one that could benefit from incremental updates to its analytical features and interface polish.

I have been using this since the 2015/2016 season. It does a great job and helps me remember epic days with day ratings and pics. I guess using it for 10 years sort of says it all.
