Signal Private Messenger: Comprehensive iOS App Review

by Signal Messenger, LLC

Signal provides end-to-end encrypted messaging and calling with robust privacy protections. The iOS app serves security-conscious users seeking alternatives to mainstream messaging platforms while maintaining full functionality.

Detailed Review

Signal stands as a premier privacy-focused messaging application that has gained significant traction among users seeking secure communication alternatives. Developed by Signal Messenger, LLC, the iOS version maintains the platform's core commitment to end-to-end encryption while delivering comprehensive messaging capabilities. The application positions itself as a direct competitor to mainstream messaging services while differentiating through its open-source architecture and nonprofit development model. The application's feature set encompasses text messaging, high-quality voice and video calls, group communications supporting up to 1,000 participants, and media sharing including photos, videos, and documents. All communications utilize the Signal Protocol encryption framework, which has become the industry standard adopted by other major platforms. The app operates exclusively over internet connectivity, avoiding traditional SMS/MMS fees while ensuring all communications remain encrypted throughout transmission. Group video calls support up to 50 participants, providing enterprise-grade communication capabilities for personal and professional use. User experience reflects a minimalist design philosophy with intuitive navigation and consistent performance across iOS devices. The interface employs a clean, subdued color scheme that multiple users have described as aesthetically pleasing and distraction-free. Real-world usage patterns demonstrate reliable message delivery and call quality comparable to mainstream alternatives, though network dependency means performance varies with connection stability. The app integrates seamlessly with iOS notification systems and maintains background operation for real-time message delivery. User feedback consistently highlights privacy assurance as the primary satisfaction driver, with reviewer FTheseApps (2025-09-04) noting 'if privacy is a concern for you then use this app for messaging.' Multiple reviews praise the clean interface design, though limitations emerge regarding media sharing constraints. DGQall (2025-08-24) specifically mentions desire for longer video sharing capabilities, while krnnb2011 (2025-09-03) appreciates the platform independence from cellular carriers despite experiencing initial connectivity issues with traditional messaging. The application demonstrates particular strength in security implementation and cross-platform consistency, though faces challenges in user adoption due to network effects and occasional media limitations. Ideal use cases include journalists, activists, privacy-conscious professionals, and anyone seeking verified encryption without subscription requirements. While the app excels in security fundamentals, broader adoption depends on convincing users to transition from established messaging ecosystems where network effects remain powerful.

I enjoy using signal but it has been misbehaving now and whenever I receive a message it doesn’t stop counting even when I view the messages it still doesn’t stop counting Text problem I enjoy using signal but it has been misbehaving now and whenever I receive a message it doesn’t stop counting even when I view the messages it still doesn’t stop counting

Update: It seems they've now addressed this issue - thank you! If your Signal version happens to be outdated, rather than doing what every other app does and prompt the user to update upon launching it, Signal will give no indication, and instead it will stop delivering ALL messages with absolutely NO feedback to the user. This is terrible UX and I unfortunately cannot recommend Signal as a reliable platform until they implement intuitive messaging for necessary software updates. Messaging blocked until you update!! It took some time to convinced all my cousins to start using Signal. For obvious reasons I am super happy that they have all joined, despite inevitable comparisons. When trying to make plans with our big group a poll-feature would help us a lot! Could we see this feature in the app any time soon?
