This app turns an iPhone into a practical rangefinding tool for outdoor activities. Users get immediate access to distance readings through a clean field-view interface. While accuracy varies without dedicated hardware, it serves as a convenient alternative for casual measurement needs.

Detailed Review

Range Vision enters the crowded utilities category with a specific focus: providing distance measurement capabilities through smartphone cameras alone. Developed by Kordel France, the app positions itself as an accessible tool for hunters, golfers, and outdoor enthusiasts who need quick range estimations without investing in dedicated hardware. The application leverages the device's built-in sensors to calculate distances, presenting readings in a straightforward visual interface that minimizes setup time. The core functionality centers on a camera-based rangefinding system that displays measurements in real-time. Upon launching, users encounter an uncluttered field view that immediately begins providing various environmental readings. The interface prioritizes usability with large, legible numerals and minimal controls, allowing for quick assessments in outdoor conditions. Testing indicates the system performs better at longer distances, with some users reporting accuracy within five feet at ranges exceeding 50 yards when compared against optical rangefinders. Real-world usage reveals both practical applications and limitations. For hunters scouting locations or golfers estimating course distances, the app provides satisfactory approximations for non-critical measurements. The immediate transition to measurement mode upon launch proves valuable in situations requiring quick assessments. However, the absence of calibration options and variable performance in different lighting conditions means professionals would still require dedicated equipment for precision work. User feedback highlights several consistent trends. Positive reviews frequently mention the intuitive interface and reliable performance at longer distances, with one user noting compatibility with Vortex optics during field testing. The most common critique involves privacy considerations regarding camera permissions, as the app currently requires full camera access rather than offering 'while using' options. This implementation has drawn comments from privacy-conscious users who would prefer more granular control over data access. As a free utility, Range Vision delivers reasonable value for casual distance measurement needs. The application works adequately for approximate readings in outdoor scenarios where marginal error is acceptable. The interface design receives consistent praise for its immediacy and clarity. However, the privacy implementation and variable accuracy at shorter distances prevent a stronger recommendation for precision-dependent activities.

With the touch of the app it seamlessly transitions you straight into a very nicely laid out open field view that is ready to go and gives you all kinds of readings. Take that with a grain of salt as I don’t have a real range finder to test accuracy. An addition that I would suggest is an option when you go to your phone settings to set the app settings that allow for access to the Camera, to be an option to allow for access only when in use.. for a moderately private person that would increase the user experience. I say 5 Stars Not Bad, not bad at all! I tested the app with a couple of my Vortex scopes and it worked quite well at long ranges. It seems to be within +/- 5 feet at distances of 50 yards or more.
