Nintendo Switch App Review: What This Companion App Actually Does

by Nintendo Co., Ltd.

This official companion app from Nintendo provides supplementary services for specific Switch games and online features. Designed to help players access voice chat, view game-specific stats, and manage certain online memberships. Its utility is entirely dependent on owning and playing supported Nintendo Switch titles.

Detailed Review

The Nintendo Switch App serves as a secondary screen and management tool for the Nintendo Switch ecosystem, operating primarily from a user's smartphone. Positioned as a free adjunct to the console's online services, its core functionality is intentionally narrow, focusing on features not directly available on the Switch itself. The app’s market position is that of a specialized utility rather than a comprehensive platform, which immediately defines its audience and scope of use. Core functionality revolves around three key areas: voice chat for online multiplayer, access to game-specific information, and Nintendo Switch Online membership management. For supported titles like *Splatoon 3* or *Animal Crossing: New Horizons*, the app can display detailed stat histories, schedules, and custom item ordering. The voice chat system requires users to connect headphones to their phone, creating a separate audio channel from the game audio coming through the TV or console speakers. This design choice is a defining characteristic and a frequent point of discussion among users. In real-world usage, the app functions as a digital manual and social hub for specific games. A player might launch the app to check their recent weapon performance in *Splatoon 3* while waiting for a match to queue, or use it to call a friend for a coordinated raid in *Pokémon Scarlet and Violet*. The online membership management section allows for easy renewal of subscriptions and access to classic game libraries. However, the experience is often described as fragmented, requiring constant switching between the console and the phone for features many competitors integrate directly into their platforms. User feedback trends heavily critique the app's mandatory use for voice communication, which is seen as an inconvenient workaround. Reviews frequently indicate frustration with the lack of a unified party system and the inability to message friends directly through the app. Positive comments typically come from dedicated players of specific supported games who appreciate the deep stat tracking and exclusive item ordering features, such as the Nook Shopping service in *Animal Crossing*. The absence of a broad, console-wide feature set is a consistent theme in community discussions. Overall, the Nintendo Switch App is a functional but limited tool that fulfills a specific set of tasks for engaged Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Its value is almost entirely conditional on the games a user plays and their tolerance for a disjointed social interface. The app delivers on its promised features for supported software but feels underdeveloped as a holistic companion for a modern gaming platform, reflecting a cautious approach to online infrastructure.

Key Features

  • Game-specific stat tracking: Provides detailed post-match analytics and history for supported titles like the Splatoon series, offering insights into performance trends.
  • Smartphone-based voice chat: Enables online voice communication by using the phone as a separate audio channel, requiring headphones connected to the mobile device.
  • Exclusive in-game ordering: Allows users to purchase special items from games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons via the Nook Shopping catalog on their phone.
  • Nintendo Switch Online management: Centralizes control for subscription status, automatic renewal settings, and access to member benefits.
  • Splatoon 3 SplatNet 3 integration: Delivers stage schedules, weapon statistics, and gear information directly from the game's online service.
  • Limited social features: Enables the creation of online play invites (rooms) for certain games, though communication options within the app are basic.

I love the app and how it works and looks but I think I have an idea of how it could be even better! What if the Nintendo Switch app would connect with your Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2 and you can get achievements from playing the game and then you can get platinum points and depending on how difficult the achievement is, the more you can earn. What do you think of this idea? I also think that maybe you could download the app on your Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2 to get extra by going on it daily! Bye! Idea for a major update.
