LA Times App Review: Digital Newspaper and Breaking News Coverage

by Los Angeles Times Communications LLC

The LA Times iOS app delivers award-winning journalism with real-time breaking news alerts and digital newspaper access. Designed for Southern California residents and global readers seeking reliable local and international coverage.

Detailed Review

The LA Times mobile application serves as a comprehensive digital news platform, providing users with immediate access to the publication's award-winning journalism. Positioned as a premier source for Southern California news with global reach, the app combines traditional newspaper depth with modern digital convenience through its recently redesigned interface. Core functionality includes two distinct reading modes: a digital content browser optimized for mobile consumption and an eNewspaper feature replicating the print edition's layout. The app delivers breaking news notifications every few minutes, covering politics, entertainment, food culture, and local events. Users can access in-depth coverage of Western U.S. issues alongside exclusive narrative storytelling and investigative reporting that distinguishes the publication. The interface employs a clean, professional design with intuitive navigation between sections. The eNewspaper implementation provides familiar pagination for traditional newspaper readers, while the digital view offers responsive article formatting. Real-world usage patterns show high engagement during morning commutes and evening reading sessions, with push notifications serving as critical alerts for developing stories throughout the day. User feedback consistently praises the app's reliability compared to alternatives, with reviewer shawnboys (September 9, 2024) noting 'updates every two or three minutes of breaking news.' Another user, MyratBekdurdyyev (July 20, 2021), highlighted superior performance over competing news apps after experiencing persistent buffering issues elsewhere. These testimonials reflect broader satisfaction with the app's stability and content depth. The application demonstrates particular strength in local coverage depth and notification frequency, though some users may find the subscription model limiting for full access. Performance remains consistently stable according to user reports, with the dual viewing options catering to both traditional newspaper readers and digital-native consumers. Ideal for professionals requiring timely Southern California news updates and readers seeking substantive journalism beyond headline scanning.

I subscribed to get the Sunday paper delivered but guess I’m getting daily digital too & paying a little than I thought just for Sunday edition. When I contacted customer service to ask about charges was told I don’t have an account. How odd. Today’s email from subscription services said they weren’t able to charge my card. Guess if they get too wonky I will cancel Sunday paper I subscribed to get the Sunday paper delivered but guess I’m getting daily digital too & paying a little than I thought just for Sunday edition. I’ve been using ”ABC7 Los Angeles” app for over 3 years , and I gotta say that app sucked. It always buffers and most of the time doesn’t even stop loading, and never works. I was still using it thinking that was the only local news app(silly me), until I deleted it and came about to “LA Times”. I’m very happy with it. It has a great UI and very simple to use, and most importantly it doesn’t buffer or loads for more than 3 seconds. Good job guys! It’s a very futuristic app, and I love it!
