Klipper | OctoPrint - Obico App Review: Mastering Remote 3D Printer Management

by TSD

This app serves as a dedicated mobile companion for 3D printing enthusiasts running the popular Klipper firmware or OctoPrint server. It provides robust remote monitoring and control, turning an iOS device into a portable command center. Perfect for users who need to check print progress, receive failure alerts, or make adjustments from anywhere.

Detailed Review

The Klipper | OctoPrint - Obico app by TSD occupies a specific niche in the 3D printing ecosystem, functioning as a streamlined conduit between an iOS device and a printer running either the Klipper firmware or an OctoPrint server. It is not a standalone slicer or printer host, but rather a specialized tool for remote management, which is a critical need for prints that can last dozens of hours. Its market position is defined by its deep integration with these two specific, highly popular backend systems, offering a focused alternative to generic remote desktop solutions. Core functionality revolves around delivering a comprehensive dashboard. Users can view a live camera feed, monitor detailed print progress statistics like elapsed time and filament used, and access essential controls. This includes starting, pausing, or stopping prints, adjusting temperatures for hotends and beds, and sending emergency stops. A key differentiator is the integration of Obico's (formerly The Spaghetti Detective) AI-powered failure detection service, which analyzes the camera feed for print defects and can trigger automatic pauses. The app acts as the notification hub for these alerts. From a user experience perspective, the interface prioritizes the most critical information for a print in progress. The layout is generally logical, presenting the camera feed prominently with controls arrayed around it for quick access. Real-world usage scenarios include receiving a push notification about a potential print failure while away from home, then using the app to visually confirm the issue and issue a pause command to prevent further waste of material. Another common use is pre-heating the printer remotely to have it ready upon arrival in a workshop. As a newer listing with a high rating but no published reviews at the time of writing, user feedback trends must be inferred from the broader Obico ecosystem and the app's predecessor. Typically, users of such integrated systems highly value reliable push notifications and a stable video stream. Potential friction points mentioned in similar contexts occasionally involve initial setup complexity, requiring correct configuration of the OctoPrint or Klipper server with the Obico plugin, and the quality of the camera stream being dependent on local network conditions. In a balanced assessment, the app delivers a highly specialized and effective tool for its intended audience. Its strength lies in its focused design and the powerful Obico failure detection integration, which addresses a major pain point in 3D printing. The primary limitation is its lack of utility for those not invested in the Klipper or OctoPrint ecosystems; it is useless for printers running stock firmware or other hosts. Furthermore, while the app itself is polished, its performance is inherently tied to the stability of the user's own server setup and network.

Key Features

  • Live remote monitoring with a full-screen camera feed, allowing visual confirmation of print progress from any location with an internet connection.
  • Push notifications for print completion, failures, or alerts from the integrated Obico AI print failure detection system, providing peace of mind.
  • Direct printer control including start, pause, stop, and emergency halt functions, alongside manual temperature setting adjustments for the hotend and bed.
  • Detailed print job status display showing percentage complete, time elapsed, time remaining, and filament length used for precise tracking.
  • Seamless integration with the Obico cloud service (via plugin), which analyzes the camera stream for printing errors like spaghetti defects and layer shifts.
  • Support for multiple printer connections, enabling users with several machines to manage them all from a single, unified mobile dashboard.

In fact this might be the first one I’ve ever done on the App Store - I love this app for monitoring and managing my prints. I. Use it daily to manage my 2 printers. It’s super easy to setup once you have octoprint going , and the app and web interface work seamlessly. Love it !! I’ve had some webcam issues that may or may not be Obico’s fault, but I suggested via email that it may be due to their app, and their team was incredibly responsive, and they have been more helpful than I could have ever imagined a company being. The app just works amazingly well too, and even with this webcam issue that might be something else entirely, this is by far the best OctoPrint app out there. I’ve tried other top apps, and they all require you to install multiple apps and plugins and then connect them all and pay subscription fees to each app if you want all the benefits. This app is the only one stop shop that I’ve come across, and it’s been super easy to use. Highly recommend. With a raspberry pie and a mini camera you can view and control your a 3-D printer from anywhere in the world. It also has some features where it’ll watch while you’re not able to watch. Those are a work in progress. But they’re getting there. It’s kind of like speech to text and all types of AI. It’s not always right but it helps. Great app. Does what I want!
