Detailed Review

Halide Mark II by Lux Optics positions itself as a professional-grade camera application for iOS, aiming to transform the iPhone into a more deliberate photographic tool. The app enters a crowded marketplace of camera utilities but differentiates itself through a dedicated focus on manual controls, a clean interface, and deep integration with Apple's hardware capabilities. Its premium pricing and subscription model place it in a higher tier, inviting scrutiny over whether its features deliver tangible value for its target audience. At its core, Halide Mark II offers granular control over exposure, focus, and white balance. Users can shoot in RAW formats, including ProRAW on compatible iPhones, providing significantly more editing latitude in post-production. Key functionalities include focus peaking for manual focus assistance, a live histogram for exposure evaluation, and sophisticated grid overlays. The app also provides direct access to all lenses on multi-lens iPhone models, allowing quick switching between ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto perspectives. A unique 'Instant RAW' feature attempts to bridge the gap between computational speed and manual control. In practical use, the interface is designed for efficiency, with gesture-based controls and customizable buttons. For instance, a photographer shooting a portrait can manually set focus on the subject's eyes using focus peaking, lock exposure separately, and capture in RAW—all steps that are either impossible or deeply buried in the stock Camera app. Real-world scenarios where it excels include studio-like still life photography, macro shots of insects or plants where autofocus may hunt, and landscapes where precise exposure control is critical. However, the learning curve is steeper than the default app, and the speed of capture can be marginally slower when manual settings are engaged. User feedback, as seen in app store reviews, consistently highlights several strengths. Many describe it as an essential tool for overcoming the overly processed 'computational photography' look of modern iPhones, praising its ability to deliver more natural images. Reviews from photographers and enthusiasts frequently commend the manual focus precision, particularly for macro work. The app's design and reliability also receive positive notes. On the other hand, critical feedback often centers on its cost, with some users noting it as a reason for discontinuation. Others mention a desire for Android availability, indicating the app's exclusivity is a limitation for platform-agnostic users. Overall, Halide Mark II delivers a robust, professional photography experience that successfully unlocks the iPhone's hardware potential. Its strengths in manual control and image quality output are clear, making it a compelling choice for serious mobile photographers. The primary limitations involve its price point and platform exclusivity. For casual users happy with automated results, the investment may be hard to justify. But for those seeking DSLR-like control from their iPhone, Halide Mark II stands as a highly capable, if premium, solution.

Key Features

  • Full manual controls for focus, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, providing DSLR-like shooting discipline directly from an iPhone.
  • Comprehensive RAW capture support, including Apple ProRAW, yielding image files with greater detail and editing flexibility than JPEG.

It’s a great app and I only stopped using it because it was out of my budget range and have finally purchased a real camera. Highly recommend it though to those frustrated by limited iphone default settings. I still take a lot of photos with my phone though and would consider purchasing, however it seems to be apple only and I will be switching over to a non-apple phone by the end of this year. This is exactly what I was looking for. I recently got a iPhone 16 pro and wanted more freedom (manual focus) with my camera. I also am often taking macro images of plants and insects so MF is a must. After trying a couple other apps that fell flat for me, I landed on Halide. The functionality and ease of use is unmatched. Overall, I am very pleased. 10/10 recommend for pros and/or enthusiasts alike. Outstanding! This is exactly what I was looking for. This is a fantastic app and I depend on it to get perfectly focused macro shots. The biggest bummer however is that sometimes, when I don't have internet, it forgets I paid for it and locks me out until I get internet again. This is a huge bummer since often some of the most beautiful and unique places to photograph are the same places that don't have cell service. I wish I could just buy this app and own it forever without it needing to phone home periodically. Great app. But sometimes breaks without internet.
