Enter the Gungeon iOS: Comprehensive Review of Devolver's Bullet Hell Roguelike

by Devolver

0IOSGames
Enter the Gungeon delivers a challenging bullet hell dungeon crawler to iOS, featuring cooperative play, procedurally generated levels, and hundreds of weapons. This port targets hardcore gamers seeking intense, replayable combat with deep mechanical complexity.

Detailed Review

Enter the Gungeon represents Devolver Digital's ambitious iOS adaptation of their critically acclaimed bullet hell roguelike, translating the intense dungeon crawling experience to mobile platforms. The game follows multiple adventurers seeking the legendary Gun That Can Kill The Past, combining twin-stick shooting mechanics with procedurally generated levels, creating a fresh experience with each run through the ever-changing Gungeon. The core gameplay revolves around precise shooting, dodging through bullet patterns, and strategic resource management across multiple floors of increasingly difficult enemies. Players select from unique characters like the Marine, Hunter, or Convict, each with specialized starting gear and abilities. The game features over 300 weapons and items, from conventional shotguns to absurd creations like a gun that shoots sharks, creating endless combat variations. Cooperative multiplayer allows two players to tackle the Gungeon together, though the iOS version currently lacks online matchmaking functionality. Control implementation presents both adaptation successes and challenges on touchscreens. The virtual twin-stick controls provide adequate precision for most combat situations, with customizable button placement addressing varying device sizes. However, technical issues reported by users indicate persistent problems with control customization interfering with core functions like dodging and map access. The interface maintains the original's clean HUD design while adapting inventory management for touch interactions, though the intense action demands larger screen devices for optimal visibility during chaotic battles. User feedback reveals consistent praise for gameplay depth alongside technical concerns. Reviewer 0_____0 (September 9, 2025) reported control customization bugs preventing basic actions, while Hmxik (September 4, 2025) noted the absence of online players for cooperative modes. Multiple reviews including Really no hands (September 6, 2025) describe stability issues with the game crashing after single sessions. Despite these technical limitations, users universally acknowledge the faithful translation of the game's challenging combat and extensive content library. The iOS version successfully delivers Enter the Gungeon's signature challenging gameplay and massive content library to mobile devices, maintaining the original's tight combat mechanics and rewarding progression systems. However, technical issues including control customization bugs, stability problems, and the absence of online matchmaking significantly impact the experience. The game remains best suited for dedicated roguelike enthusiasts willing to overlook technical shortcomings for deep, challenging gameplay, particularly when using physical controllers rather than touchscreen inputs.

I’ve already said this game is just the best game out of the many thousands out there. I’ve spent way too long playing it on Xbox. I just have one request, but it’s NOT those two things everyone’s asking about for controllers: please fix data saving offline. I lost progress from a four hour play session. Also, even though I did in fact buy the full version, it tried to tell me I didn’t. Still a great game, just a few issues with the offline part. ITS SO GOOD but hard as a gun, So many enemies, more boss fight, and MORE, but we needed something, something in multiplayer, We needed 2 players turn into 4 Players. You could play 4 Players! That should make the game MORE FUN! THIS IS THE BEST! But Add something new in multiplayer. I love Enter the Gungeon, 10/10 amazing game, but WHY does the mobile version have online multiplayer and the console or computer version only have local multiplayer? You cant expect me to only play with my friends in the Gungeon just on my phone? I really want this online multiplayer function to go to console and computer versions. I love this game so much, had it on console, pc, and now mobile. I enjoy it a bunch and the console and pc versions are really nice ironed out games for the most part. The mobile version is almost the same glory. However, I don't like that it's not just $9.99 from the store itself, it presents a level of falseness to the game. There are certain bugs, like when accessing the menu it doesn't let you close out sometimes, some enemy sprites are messed up, and on iPad the screen size and buttons are wonky. But all in all, this is a fairly new release to mobile, so I still think there's a good chance things will be smoothed out. 10/10 game overall, like a 7-8/10 on mobile.
