For Colorado residents and visitors, this state-developed application serves as a centralized hub for real-time travel information. A solid choice for winter travel planning, it provides access to traffic cameras, road condition reports, and incident alerts. The app is designed to help drivers make informed decisions before and during journeys across the state's often challenging mountain passes and highways.

Detailed Review

The COtrip Planner app, developed by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), operates as a public service tool for navigating the state's extensive and variable roadway network. Its primary function is aggregating official data streams—including traffic camera feeds, road condition classifications, weather impacts, and reported incidents—into a single mobile interface. The app positions itself not as a flashy consumer navigation product but as a reliable, government-source supplement to tools like Google Maps or Waze, offering authoritative information specific to Colorado's unique driving environment. Core functionality centers on its interactive map, which users can overlay with color-coded road condition reports (dry, wet, icy, closed) and the locations of hundreds of highway traffic cameras. A trip planning feature allows for inputting origin and destination to receive a route-specific summary of conditions and potential delays. The ability to save frequently viewed cameras as favorites is a noted feature, particularly for commuters or those monitoring a specific mountain pass. However, the interface can feel utilitarian and occasionally clunky compared to more polished commercial apps, with some menu navigation requiring an extra tap or two. In real-world scenarios, the app's value becomes most apparent during winter storms or in remote areas. A driver planning a trip from Denver to Vail can check camera views of the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass in real-time to assess visibility and snowplow activity. Families awaiting visitors can use the app to provide updates on route conditions. The information is trusted because it comes directly from CDOT, encompassing everything from chain laws to crash-related road closures. It functions best when used proactively before departure, though it can be referenced en route for updates. User feedback, as seen in the App Store, is overwhelmingly positive among those who utilize it for its intended purpose. Reviews consistently highlight the traffic camera access and the reliability of official condition reports as the app's strongest assets. One recurring piece of constructive feedback is the desire for more customizable alerts or the ability to track specific assets like snowplow trucks, as mentioned in a user review. The app's lower average rating appears to stem from users expecting a full-turn-by-turn navigation experience, which it is not designed to be, rather than from flaws in its core data presentation. Overall, the COtrip Planner app is a highly specialized and valuable tool for its niche. Its strengths lie in the accuracy and official nature of its data, particularly for hazardous weather driving. Its limitations involve a somewhat dated user experience and a scope that is strictly informational rather than guided navigation. For anyone driving in Colorado, especially during the winter months, having this app installed is a prudent safety measure, even if it's not used for every single trip.

One can view roadways through out Colorado. I am uncertain what people expect but this site is pretty darn cool. I use it to preview road conditions, accidents and other highway issues as I travel or as the site says when I am planning a trip in Colorado. One can actually traffic conditions and if there are stoppages from all sorts of issues. Makes one realize the government can view you just about anywhere in Colorado on public roads.
