Cookie-Editor for iOS: Detailed Analysis of Safari Cookie Management Extension

by Christophe Gagnier

Cookie-Editor provides granular control over browser cookies through Safari extensions. This tool serves web developers testing authentication flows and privacy-conscious users managing tracking cookies. The interface prioritizes functionality over aesthetics with straightforward cookie operations.

Detailed Review

Cookie-Editor emerges as a specialized Safari extension for iOS that enables direct manipulation of browser cookies, filling a gap in Apple's native privacy controls. Developed by Christophe Gagnier, this utility addresses both development testing scenarios and personal privacy management needs where standard browser settings prove insufficient. The app operates exclusively within Safari's extension ecosystem, requiring activation through Settings > Safari > Extensions before functionality becomes available. The core functionality centers on comprehensive cookie management operations including listing, editing, creating, and deleting cookies across domains. Unlike built-in cookie clearing options, this extension allows selective modification of individual cookie values, expiration dates, and domain permissions. This granular control proves particularly valuable for web developers debugging authentication sessions or testing website behavior under different cookie states. Privacy-focused users can employ these features to remove specific tracking cookies while preserving functional session data. User experience reflects a utilitarian design philosophy with minimal visual embellishments. The interface presents cookies in a sortable list format with clear options for modification. Real-world usage patterns show two primary workflows: developers rapidly testing cookie-dependent functionalities during website development, and privacy advocates conducting surgical removal of tracking cookies after browsing sessions. The extension integrates seamlessly into Safari's share sheet, though some users report initial confusion regarding the required activation process in iOS Settings. User feedback consistently highlights the app's focused functionality, with Kelvin173 noting on July 2, 2024: 'I use this extension to take control of my data.' The same reviewer emphasizes privacy concerns about Safari's native protections. Another user, 0ldN1kk3n22, observed on October 1, 2023 that the application 'does what it's meant to' without unnecessary features. These reviews reflect appreciation for specialized functionality despite the absence of polished visuals or expansive feature sets. The application's primary strength lies in its specialized cookie manipulation capabilities unavailable in standard iOS browsers, though this specialization limits broader appeal. The utilitarian interface may deter less technical users, while the requirement to enable the extension outside the app presents a minor usability hurdle. Cookie-Editor serves its niche effectively but remains most valuable for web developers and technically proficient users seeking precise cookie control rather than general consumers seeking simplified privacy solutions.

I have always worried about privacy on IOS, since Safari isn't really...private. Websites can track you down even if you enabled "do not track", so I use this extension to take control of my data. For those who cannot activate the cookie-editor, remember to enable it in Settings app -> Safari -> extensions -> allow all websites in cookie-editor, and if its greyed out, remember to disable content restriction in Screen Time Limit. It’s not supposed to be fancy or anything else than what it’s meant to and that it does. It does what it’s meant to!! It’s not supposed to be fancy or anything else than what it’s meant to and that it does.
