Carnets - Jupyter: Comprehensive iOS Implementation of Jupyter Notebooks

by Nicolas Holzschuch

Carnets delivers a fully offline Jupyter notebook environment for iOS devices with embedded Python interpreter. Targets students, researchers, and developers needing portable computational notebooks without internet dependency.

Detailed Review

Carnets - Jupyter represents a significant achievement in bringing full computational notebook capabilities to iOS devices. Developed by Nicolas Holzschuch, this application provides a completely self-contained Jupyter environment that operates independently without requiring internet connectivity or external servers. The app stands out in the mobile computing space by offering genuine local execution of Python code, making it particularly valuable for users who require reliable computational tools in offline scenarios or mobile settings. The application's core functionality centers around its complete implementation of Jupyter notebooks and JupyterLab interfaces, both accessible through configurable settings. It includes embedded support for essential scientific computing libraries including NumPy for numerical operations, SymPy for symbolic mathematics, and Matplotlib for data visualization. The architecture ensures all computation occurs locally through the integrated Python interpreter, preserving the authentic Jupyter notebook experience while maintaining complete operational independence from cloud services or external connections. User experience demonstrates thoughtful adaptation of desktop-grade tools to touch interfaces. The interface maintains the familiar cell-based structure of Jupyter notebooks while optimizing touch controls for iOS devices. Real-world usage patterns show particular strength in educational contexts, emergency computational needs, and mobile research scenarios where traditional computing equipment is unavailable or impractical. The app successfully bridges the gap between mobile convenience and professional computational requirements. User feedback consistently highlights the application's reliability and desktop-like functionality. Techess1185 (April 2022) praised its learning assistance capabilities while noting turtle package import issues. Deathhand1234 (March 2024) reported the app served as an emergency replacement for laptop-based work. Multiple reviewers including Halogeedqq (December 2021) specifically commended the identical functionality to desktop Jupyter implementations while requesting expanded library support such as PyTorch integration. The application demonstrates notable strengths in offline functionality and educational utility but faces limitations in library completeness and specialized package support. While core scientific computing libraries function reliably, some specialized packages like turtle graphics demonstrate compatibility gaps. The ideal use case involves educational Python learning, mobile computational needs, and emergency backup scenarios where full desktop access is unavailable but computational notebook functionality remains essential.

Key Features

  • Offline Jupyter notebook execution using embedded Python interpreter enables complete computational independence without internet requirements

Every single thing that Nicolas has created has been nothing short of amazing, and it includes this!!! As a FOSS lover, supporter, and developer: the tools being Open Sourced, and bridging the gap in iOS for full development are nothing short of amazing. Local Jupyter Server, which works amazing Every single thing that Nicolas has created has been nothing short of amazing, and it includes this!!! I have been self-learning Python and Python with Excel for the past couple of months using both a windows laptop (surface) and a MacBook Air (which i love), anyway i have been watching YouTube vids and i recently purchased a Python-Excel class on Udemy. Everyone has you installing python, pandas, pip, all kinds of terminals, bash, this and that. I hate installing a lot of stuff on my Windows laptop because things just don’t behave that well. So i have been playing with Pythonista on my iPad and i was looking in the store and stumbled upon Carnets. So after reading the reviews i installed it and was blown away. I didn’t like the way VSstudio worked with Jupiter notebooks, so i tried Carnets and amazing theJupyter notebook loaded. Then i tried some simple stuff and it worked great…excellent i can use my iPad now. Anyway i purchased this Udemy python-excel course and installed all the programs….I decided to try the Carnets and it worked great for all the openpyxl library and the charting libraries.Just amazing What a great app. I can’t thank you enough … Amazing, awesome, best app in the store I have been self-learning Python and Python with Excel for the past couple of months using both a windows laptop (surface) and a MacBook Air (which i love), anyway i have been watching YouTube vids and i recently purchased a Python-Excel class on Udemy. this is the best coding app for ipad. It works just the same as jupyter notebook on my laptop. however, it would be the very best if it supports pytorch. is there any future plan of supporting pytorch on this app? the best app this is the best coding app for ipad.
