Brook.app: Comprehensive Review of Cross-Platform Networking Solution

by TxThinking, Inc.

Brook.app is a client-server networking tool enabling secure cross-platform connectivity. Requires self-deployed servers through GitHub. Targets technical users needing customizable network solutions with optional premium subscription for advanced features.

Detailed Review

Brook.app represents a specialized networking solution operating on a client-server model, requiring users to deploy their own servers through the project's GitHub repository. This approach positions it as a tool for technically proficient users rather than casual consumers, distinguishing it from consumer-grade VPN services. The application functions as a cross-platform network utility designed to establish secure connections between devices, with its open-source foundation allowing for transparency and customization. The core functionality revolves around creating encrypted tunnels between the Brook client and user-deployed servers. Unlike commercial VPN services, Brook provides granular control over server configuration, encryption methods, and routing protocols. The free version offers basic connectivity features, while Brook Plus—a $29.99/year subscription—unlocks enhanced capabilities. This premium tier supports project sustainability while providing additional features for power users. The server deployment process, while requiring technical competence, is streamlined through script-based installation documented on GitHub. User experience centers around a minimalistic interface that prioritizes functionality over visual design. The connection management screen provides straightforward server configuration, status monitoring, and connection controls. Real-world usage patterns indicate primary application in scenarios requiring bypassing network restrictions, securing public Wi-Fi connections, or accessing geographically restricted resources. The technical nature of server deployment means most users employ this for specific professional or advanced personal use cases rather than general consumer privacy protection. User feedback reflects appreciation for the project's ongoing development and effectiveness, though with noted technical limitations. Reviewer hauzod (2021-06-26) praised the tool's simplicity and efficiency in network traversal, while alvinliao09 (2019-04-26) noted its operational similarity to shadowsocks with potentially lower detection profiles. Multiple reviews from 2018-2019, including from johnfromnowhere, mentioned stability issues and UDP support limitations, though the consistent 5-star ratings suggest users value functionality over polish. The application demonstrates significant strengths in customization and transparency through its open-source model, but requires substantial technical expertise for server deployment and maintenance. While effective for users comfortable with command-line interfaces and server management, it lacks the convenience of commercial solutions. Ideal for developers, network administrators, and privacy-conscious technical users who require control over their networking infrastructure and prefer self-hosted solutions over third-party services.

This app uses a similar working mechanism as shadowsocks. While this app is less used and less well-known, currently it works great with less attentions from the authority. The deployment of the server side is only a script work and quite user-friendly. You don’t need to care about the encryption method or something really techy like obfs, udp.
