ANDROIDMaps & Navigation
A powerful tool that divides the world into 3-meter squares, each with a unique three-word address. Perfect for emergency services, outdoor enthusiasts, and delivery drivers who need precise location sharing. The app transforms complex coordinates into simple, memorable phrases that work globally.

Detailed Review

What3words offers a systematic approach to location identification by assigning every 3-meter square on Earth a unique three-word combination. This addressing system provides an alternative to traditional coordinates and street addresses, particularly valuable in areas with poor addressing infrastructure or remote locations. The app's methodology has gained recognition from emergency services, automotive manufacturers, and logistics companies worldwide. The core functionality centers on converting between three-word addresses and physical locations. Users can search for destinations using the word combinations, share their current location through various messaging platforms, and navigate using integrated mapping. The system works offline once maps are downloaded, making it functional in areas with limited connectivity. Integration capabilities allow the app to work with other navigation systems, including professional truck satnav units according to user reports. In practical scenarios, the app demonstrates particular strength during emergencies. Multiple reviews describe situations where emergency services located individuals precisely using shared three-word addresses on cycle paths, in remote woodlands, and along country roads. Outdoor enthusiasts utilize it for marking camping spots, trailheads, and meeting points where traditional addresses don't exist. Delivery drivers and breakdown services employ it to find specific entrances or remote properties where postcodes cover large areas. User feedback consistently highlights reliability in critical situations. Reviews from emergency service workers note the app's role in multiple successful rescue operations. The breakdown assistance scenario appears frequently, with users describing how services like RAC successfully located them using shared three-word addresses. Some interface quirks emerge in feedback, including occasional accidental movement of target locations during zoom gestures, though these don't significantly impact the overall experience. While the concept proves exceptionally valuable in specific use cases, the system's effectiveness depends on all parties having access to the platform or integration. The app provides substantial value for emergency preparedness, outdoor activities, and precise location sharing, though traditional navigation apps may better serve routine urban navigation needs. The absence of advertisements and free core functionality makes it accessible for most users.

used as a safeguard when running off-road to ensure that, if the worst happens, I can get a very precise location out for help. also used it for treasure hunts and general navigation. if I had one quibble, it is that I can set a target location look at my route and my blue dot approaching the target spot... but if I accidentally do a one finger touch while doing a 2 finger zoom gesture, my target square moves... a "did you mean this" check before moving the target!

Amazing idea and amazing app. I have used it for years and have tried to get other people to use it. Imagine yourself being broken down in the middle of nowhere. Do you want to be fumbling with long latitude and longitude coordinates? Or use an app recognized and used by the US government, car manufacturers and many more companies? How about being in the woods and you want to leave but easily remember where you were. It's also fun to use with friends. The possibilities are endless.

used to help ambulance find us on a cycle path after my wife had a bad crash. absolutely brilliant because trying to describe where I was wasn't very helpful to the agent.
