The Guardian app delivers real-time global news with personalized content curation and integrated podcasts. Designed for readers seeking independent journalism across politics, business, and sports with minute-by-minute live coverage.

Detailed Review

The Guardian - Live World News app provides access to the publication's award-winning journalism through a mobile platform that emphasizes real-time updates and personalized content delivery. The application serves as a digital extension of the Guardian's editorial mission, offering both free and subscription-based access to its reporting across international news, politics, business, culture, and sports. Core functionality centers around the redesigned 'My Guardian' tab, which enables users to follow specific topics and receive tailored content streams. The app integrates the publication's complete podcast library directly within the interface, supporting hands-free consumption of audio content. Live blogging capabilities provide minute-by-minute coverage of developing stories, while the article presentation maintains the Guardian's distinctive editorial tone and depth of analysis. The interface employs a clean, text-focused design with clear section divisions, though navigation requires multiple back-button presses when drilling deep into article chains. The app performs efficiently in loading content and refreshing live blogs, with offline reading capabilities for saved articles. Real-world usage patterns show particularly strong engagement during breaking news events, where live blogs provide comprehensive chronological coverage. User feedback indicates general satisfaction with content quality, though interface criticisms persist. Doug Oliver's June 2025 review notes significant improvements in topic organization while lamenting the removal of homepage editing features. Karen O'Brien's May 2025 review highlights the app's effectiveness as a newspaper replacement, particularly praising its journalistic standards. Another May 2025 review from 'Make Name Acceptable Go' acknowledges excellent content but criticizes navigation efficiency and inconsistency between app and web features. The application excels in content depth and personalization options, particularly for users seeking progressive-leaning international coverage. Limitations include navigation inefficiencies and some feature disparities between mobile and web platforms. The app serves readers who value comprehensive, real-time news coverage with strong editorial perspective, though interface refinements could enhance the user experience for those prioritizing efficient navigation.

I just left The Times app as it was getting really boring and thin on the whole. Headlines would take me to another story altogether sometimes. Was getting my main news from my fave You Tube pundits. Started back on the Guardian after 6 years off it and I'm thrilled at how much better it is. I subscribed after my free article limit was up as I think it's well worth it. Great and varied journalism. Improved interactivity. Thanks v much.

The recent changes to this app now mean that at last I can view the entirety of the content using TalkBack, and I find this now works verry well. I find the adverts unintrusive and I don't necessarily mind as I'm what is considered to be your clasic Guardian reader. The app is verry easy to use, and the content is "First Class", and the journalism and opinion is the "Gold standard".

Works really well. I no longer buy a paper newspaper (but I do pay a monthly subscription so that the Guardian can continue with its excellent journalism) but you don't have to do that to enjoy this fine newspaper via this excellent app!

Thank the Lord for the Guardian as a beacon of sanity in today's world. However there seems to be an Android 10 issue, the app goes into paroxysms if you read an article then click 'home'. Only way to fix it is to restart the phone. Nasty bug.
