The CW app provides free ad-supported streaming of current series, classic shows, movies, and live sports. Targets cord-cutters seeking network content without subscription fees, though ad frequency varies by content length.

Detailed Review

The CW mobile application serves as the official streaming platform for The CW Network, delivering free access to the network's extensive catalog of television series, films, and live sports events. Positioned in the competitive ad-supported streaming market, the app distinguishes itself through its combination of current season episodes, deep library content, and exclusive sports coverage including LIV Golf tournaments and Inside the NFL. This positions it as a viable alternative to subscription-based services for budget-conscious viewers. The application's core functionality centers around three content pillars: current primetime programming including All American and Walker, archival series like Grimm and Party of Five, and the recently expanded movie collection. The CHANNELS feature provides linear streaming experiences for users preferring lean-back viewing. Technical specifications include adaptive bitrate streaming up to 1080p resolution, though quality may vary based on connection speed. The Android version recently addressed significant compatibility issues with Android TV devices in version 5.13.1, resolving a four-month outage that had impacted users since January 2025. User experience presents a mixed implementation. The interface follows standard streaming app conventions with horizontal scrolling carousels and categorized content rows. Navigation remains intuitive for basic browsing, though some design choices prove problematic. Notably, the end-of-episode experience features an intrusive full-screen recommendation overlay that cannot be dismissed, directly interfering with content consumption during closing scenes and credits. This implementation contrasts with industry standards where such prompts typically appear as smaller overlays or post-credit sequences. User feedback trends indicate satisfaction with the free access model despite advertising presence. Reviews from May and June 2025 highlight the resolution of Android TV compatibility issues, with user freeperjim noting on May 6, 2025 that 'the app for Android is now working - first since January.' Sarah Fluegel's June 28, 2025 review acknowledges 'a good amount of ads' but appreciates the free content and reasonable data collection practices. Critical feedback focuses primarily on the intrusive end-screen recommendations, with user Mikey noting on May 30, 2025 that the pop-up 'blocking the ending' creates frustration. The application's primary strength remains its cost-free access to current network programming and exclusive sports content, though this comes with trade-offs in advertising frequency and occasional UX frustrations. Ideal usage scenarios include catching up on recently aired CW series without cable subscriptions, exploring classic network programming, or accessing LIV Golf coverage. The platform serves best as a supplementary streaming option rather than a primary service, particularly for viewers tolerant of advertising interruptions in exchange for free content access.

This app is great in my opinion. Although there are a good amount of ads, the shows are free and the app doesn't collect a ridiculous amount of data on you. For some of the shows with shorter run times the fequency of ads can be a little annoying, but not terrible. I also havent experienced any of the technical issues others have but that might be down to device type. If you don't mind watching ads in exchange for free shows this is honestly a pretty great app.

Ads, there are too many too often. However, they have shows I truly enjoy. You will have to watch and decide for yourself.
