Signal Private Messenger delivers robust end-to-end encrypted messaging and calling for privacy-conscious users. The open-source platform offers free, secure communication across text, media, and group chats without data collection.

Detailed Review

Signal Private Messenger represents the gold standard in secure mobile communication, developed by the non-profit Signal Foundation. The application provides comprehensive end-to-end encryption for all communication modalities while maintaining a completely free service model without advertisements or data monetization. Its open-source architecture allows independent verification of security claims, positioning it as a preferred choice for journalists, activists, and privacy-aware individuals globally. The application's core functionality encompasses encrypted text messaging, high-quality voice and video calls supporting up to 50 participants, and group chats accommodating 1,000 members. Media sharing includes photos, videos, GIFs, and files without compression or quality reduction. Cross-platform synchronization between mobile and desktop clients maintains seamless encryption throughout, though periodic re-linking may be required after extended desktop inactivity according to user reports. All communication utilizes the phone's data connection, eliminating SMS/MMS fees while ensuring encryption protection. User experience demonstrates thoughtful design with an intuitive interface that prioritizes accessibility without compromising security features. The application maintains reliable performance across daily messaging scenarios, though some users report occasional notification delays requiring manual app activation to receive new messages. Desktop integration receives particular praise for its straightforward implementation, with Bastiaan Molleman noting on September 6, 2025 that linking with PC is 'fast and easy' despite occasional re-linking requirements. Call quality generally receives positive feedback, though inconsistencies appear in user assessments regarding voice performance. User feedback trends reveal overwhelming satisfaction with security implementation and reliability. Sage's September 6, 2025 review highlights that the app 'hasn't crashed for me in years' while praising backup reliability, though noting occasional notification issues. Multiple reviews from August and September 2025 consistently praise the application's privacy protections compared to alternatives, with Bastiaan Molleman specifically contrasting positive experiences against Telegram. Critical feedback focuses on specific functionality gaps, including James C's September 6, 2025 comment regarding Android Auto integration limitations and mixed reports about call quality consistency. The application excels in security implementation, cross-platform functionality, and ad-free user experience, though faces limitations in notification reliability and specialized integration scenarios. Ideal for users prioritizing privacy over social features, Signal delivers enterprise-grade security in an accessible package suitable for personal and professional secure communication requirements. While minor interface refinements could enhance user experience, the core security proposition remains uncompromised and industry-leading.

Actually, it's a good app. I've been using it for just a few days, and I'm really satisfied with it. I haven't used it for phone or video calls yet, but to be honest, I think it will be fine."

Daughter and family are out of the country. Phones won't send pictures, but Signal sends both pictures and messages. Love it.

great app. Just works really well, no annoying things that I've found. It's not really good at calls though.
