The New York Times Games app delivers curated daily puzzles including crosswords, Wordle, and logic games. Designed for puzzle enthusiasts seeking intellectually stimulating content with progressive difficulty and social sharing capabilities.

Detailed Review

The New York Times Games app consolidates the publication's renowned puzzle portfolio into a unified mobile experience, positioning itself as a premium destination for daily mental exercise. The platform offers both timeless classics like the graded-difficulty crossword—which escalates from Monday's beginner level to Saturday's expert challenge—and modern viral hits including the official Wordle implementation, requiring users to deduce five-letter words within six attempts. Additional offerings include Connections (category-based word grouping), Spelling Bee (letter combination challenges), and Strands (thematic word searches). Functionality extends beyond mere game access, featuring progress tracking, solution archives dating back years, and social comparison tools that allow users to share results without spoilers. The interface employs a clean, minimalist design with intuitive navigation between games, though some users report occasional technical issues. Real-world usage patterns show strong morning engagement, with many users establishing daily rituals around puzzle completion, often while commuting or during breakfast routines. User feedback generally reflects high satisfaction with the content quality and variety, though technical stability emerges as a recurring concern. Reviewer Valeri Jones (September 2, 2025) reported persistent launch failures displaying yellow screens despite troubleshooting attempts, while Rayna Thompson (June 18, 2025) praised the app's ability to facilitate shared puzzle experiences with family members. The archival access receives particular appreciation from enthusiasts like Lessa Kennedy (June 25, 2025) who engage with both current and historical puzzles. The app's primary strength lies in its curated, high-quality content that maintains consistent intellectual challenge, though it faces limitations in technical reliability and some feature accessibility behind subscription paywalls. Ideal for dedicated puzzle solvers seeking structured mental stimulation, the app delivers substantial value despite occasional performance issues, particularly for users who value the New York Times' editorial standards and variety of puzzle formats.

I've played this at least some every day for the last month, But in the last 24 hours or so I haven't been able to open it. It either comes up with a yellow screen and the black logo in the middle, Or just a plain yellow screen. I've tried a Force stop and clearing the cache but I'm about to lose my 48-day streak on the games I usually play. I'm really sad! Edit: It came back for a day and now I have the same problem. One fewer stars. Edit: Back up! ★★★★★ Edit: Updated, still won't load ★★

I never thought I'd have a good word to say about anything The New York Times ever did except get thrown out with the next day's trash. But I had been playing Wordle and Connections most days because each day's game is free to the public. I have never had the slightest attraction to crossword puzzles, but I quickly grew to like Wordle and wish I could play it more than once a day. Buying membership allows me to go back into four years of archives. I also relish the daily word finding challenge.

I like several of the NYT Games and the app makes them simple to track as I complete them. Update: Still playing my favorites (and the archives too). Connections, Wordle, Strands, and Mini-crossword. My husband also plays those three former games by using the online site and we exchange scores and sometimes discuss the solutions afterward.

Started with Wordle after hearing about it for so long and now play that, the Mini, Connections, Spelling Bee and Letter Boxed every morning. Love it! Working my way back through the available archives now and then.
