Just Dance Now App Review: Party Anywhere, but With a Catch

by Ubisoft Entertainment

ANDROIDMusic Games
This app delivers the core Just Dance experience directly to mobile devices, allowing users to turn any space into a dance floor using their phone as a motion controller. Designed to help friends and families engage in active gameplay without a dedicated console, it offers a substantial song catalog with both free and paid access models.

Detailed Review

Ubisoft's Just Dance Now brings the long-running dance franchise to a portable, accessible format. The app operates as a companion service, streaming choreographed dance routines to a screen—be it a smart TV, tablet, or computer—while using a smartphone as the motion-sensing controller. This approach cleverly circumvents the need for specialized gaming hardware, positioning the app as a potential party starter for gatherings where a console isn't available. Its freemium model provides immediate entry, though sustained use often involves additional costs. The core functionality hinges on its song library and tracking system. Players select a track, follow the on-screen dancer, and mimic the routine while their phone's accelerometer and gyroscope capture movements. Scores are awarded based on timing and accuracy, with classic Just Dance motifs like 'Gold Moves' and multiplayer modes intact. A 'World Dance Floor' feature allows for competitive play against others online in real-time. However, the experience is fundamentally tied to a stable internet connection for both the display device and the controller phone, which can be a limiting factor. In real-world usage, setting up a session involves navigating a somewhat clunky initial pairing process where devices connect via a unique room code on the Just Dance Now website. Once running, the gameplay is familiar and energetic. The phone-as-controller works acceptably for casual play, though it lacks the precision of dedicated motion hardware like the Kinect or Joy-Con. This makes it better suited for fun, social exercise rather than competitive scoring. Battery drain on the controller phone is notable during extended play, and the audio sync can occasionally drift, requiring a manual adjustment in the settings. User feedback frequently praises the app's convenience and social appeal, especially for casual parties or as a quick physical activity for kids. Reviews indicate frustration, however, with the monetization structure. While a free daily song credit is offered, most of the expansive catalog is locked behind a 'Dance Pass' subscription or individual song rentals, which can feel expensive compared to the console version's all-you-can-play model. Another common complaint cites occasional lag between movements and on-screen feedback, which can disrupt the flow of a dance. Ultimately, Just Dance Now succeeds in its primary goal: delivering a recognizable, fun dance game experience without a console. Its strengths lie in accessibility and social play, but these are tempered by a reliance on multiple connected devices, a potentially costly paywall for regular users, and the inherent limitations of smartphone motion sensing. It's a solid choice for occasional use or specific scenarios, but falls short of being a complete replacement for the dedicated game versions.

Key Features

  • Phone-as-Controller: Uses a smartphone's sensors to track dance moves, eliminating the need for extra peripherals and allowing quick setup anywhere.
  • Extensive Song Library: Offers hundreds of tracks spanning multiple genres and eras, though access requires in-app currency or a subscription.
  • World Dance Floor: An online multiplayer mode where dancers join scheduled sessions to compete against global players for high scores in real-time.
  • Party Play Modes: Supports multiple players simultaneously (up to six) on the same screen, making it effective for group gatherings and family game nights.
  • Sweat Mode: Tracks estimated calories burned per song, positioning the app as a light cardio workout tool alongside its entertainment focus.

Loads of songs to pick from and recently updated with more options (not 2025-2026 songs though). You do have to pay to be able to do unlimited dances but I honestly thing its good value considering how much you get. And I usually wont pay anything on an app. If its not free I look for something else. But there are 100s of songs, leaderboards, versing others and easily accessible. You can chromcast or even play on your laptop screen. It is worth it IMO.

I enjoy this version better than the console. one game thats 40+ dollars with maybe 40 songs vs the yearly pass thats 30 bucks maybe and I get 100s of songs and they update the list. I enjoy this better than switching disks on a console. I wish the free trial let you earn more coins for those that want to test it before they buy it or something.

This is a nice dancing game where you can choose a song to dance along with but, you need somthing to connect your phone to see what the moves are and you should be right handed because you have to hold your phone in your right hand to track your movments and get your score and if you were gonna ask "can i play with my friends and family?" yes you need a code or scan the qr code on the screen and its online.

I love this app. Gets me so active and I have so much fun, the only partial downside is you can only have 200/200 coins at a time:( so maybe work on that but overall awesome game!!!
