ANDROIDBooks & Reference
A solid choice for readers seeking to catalog their personal collections digitally. Bookshelf – Your virtual library offers a straightforward system to track owned books, log reading progress, and manage wishlists. Its simple design focuses on utility over social features, making it a practical tool for private library management.

Detailed Review

In a crowded market of book-tracking applications, SquidBit’s Bookshelf carves out a space by focusing on core library management without the bloat of social networking or complex recommendation algorithms. The app positions itself as a digital counterpart to a physical bookshelf, providing users with a private space to document their reading journey. It appeals to those who prioritize organization and personal reference over community interaction or algorithmic discovery. Core functionality revolves around manually building a catalog. Users can add books by searching a bundled database, scanning ISBN barcodes with the device camera, or entering details manually. Each entry supports custom tags, reading status (Want to Read, Currently Reading, Read), and a personal rating system. A notes field for each book allows for recording impressions or quotes, while basic statistics offer a visual overview of reading habits over time. The absence of an integrated book retailer or library linking means all data is user-generated and maintained. Real-world usage reveals an interface that is clean but somewhat utilitarian. The process of adding books via barcode scan is notably efficient for modern paperbacks, reducing data entry time significantly. For organizing a home library prior to a move, or simply keeping track of which titles from a series have been read, the app serves its purpose effectively. However, the experience can feel manual compared to services that automatically pull in extensive metadata or provide one-tap borrowing links. It functions best as a static catalog rather than a dynamic reading portal. With no published user reviews available, potential users must rely on the high aggregate rating as an indicator of satisfaction among early adopters. Typically, apps in this niche receive praise for reliable offline access, data privacy, and ad-free experiences—areas where Bookshelf likely aligns. Criticisms for similar tools often center on database comprehensiveness for older or non-English titles, and occasional sync issues if cloud backup is offered. The lack of reviews suggests the app is either newly launched or has a dedicated but small user base quietly appreciating its focused toolset. Overall, Bookshelf – Your virtual library delivers a competent, no-frills organizational tool. Its strength lies in its singular focus and control it offers users over their data. The trade-off is a lack of connected features and community elements found in larger platforms. For readers who want a simple, private digital ledger of their collection, it is a worthy contender. Those seeking rich metadata, social features, or integration with library systems may find its scope too limited.

Nice and simple to use, not-annoying ads, no limits on how many books, all on free version! Duplicates are the only thing that I am sad is behind the paywall, but it also is a nice alert that I already have the book. Also haven't found a limit on number of "shelves" so I can keep things organised to match my physical system.

I've only just downloaded it about 5 minutes ago but I already love it. I think the only thing that could make it any better is if I was also able to read my books through the app, BUT that isn't really necessary since I have the physical copies, it would just be a nice little bonus. The app as it is is amazing and I love it and I am so glad someone created it. I have a HUGE book collection and this will help me catalog, organize, and keep track of all of them and which ones I've read or not.

Edit 10/12/25 - I absolutely loved this app. I still use it years later! 9/17/22: This app is a must for all book lovers. It's very easy to catalog and organize your books your books. By being able to scan the barcode or ISBN, it automatically pulls in data about the books, you can also make notes and set up your own hashtags for organization. Another nice point is that you can make wish list when going through a bookstore and just scan the books that you're interested in for your TBR.

This is one of most useful apps, if not the most useful one on my phone. I managed to create a catalogue of hundreds of books in less than a couple of hours. Its scan feature is amazing and allows you to add your books to the catalogue by scanning the ISBN barcodes. It finds them even before you've had time to fully scan the barcodes! It works extremely fast! Being able to sort and search books based on categories is also extremely useful. Thank you for developing such a wonderful app.

I love it, as a teacher it makes it easier to see what books I have to use for lesson planning instead of digging through all the books. it allows me to just look for the specific books I need. I would suggest a way to print out the list of books. I would have loved a PDF version.
