Bluesky offers a decentralized social networking alternative with customizable feeds and short-form content. The platform targets digital natives seeking community-driven engagement beyond traditional social media algorithms and content moderation.

Detailed Review

Bluesky emerges as a decentralized social networking platform developed by Bluesky PBLLC, positioning itself as an alternative to established social media networks. The Android application facilitates short-text communication across diverse interest communities while employing an open-source framework that distinguishes it from proprietary platforms. The app's architecture enables user-controlled experiences through customizable algorithms and independent moderation services. The core functionality centers around microblogging with support for multimedia attachments, following mechanisms, and discovery through approximately 25,000 curated feeds. Users can navigate content categorized by interests including news, gaming, art, and hobbies through both algorithmic and chronological timelines. The platform's decentralized design permits third-party developers to create custom feeds and moderation tools, providing unusual flexibility in content curation compared to conventional social networks. User experience demonstrates both thoughtful design choices and persistent technical challenges. The interface employs a clean, minimalist aesthetic with intuitive navigation between home, search, and profile sections. However, multiple user reports indicate ongoing interface issues including problematic media handling, inconsistent navigation button behavior, and keyboard interface conflicts. Real-world usage patterns suggest the platform serves best for quick browsing sessions and niche community engagement rather than extended content consumption. User feedback reveals consistent patterns across positive and critical reviews. Ken G's July 2025 review praises general functionality while criticizing photo management: 'Rather than downloading to a Bluesky folder... it goes straight into camera roll.' Mason Deterding's June 2025 review notes improvement in profile photo uploads but highlights 'issues with spam accounts attempting to rack up followers.' Multiple reviews from mid-2025 document persistent technical issues including video playback failures and interface constraints affecting usability. The platform demonstrates significant potential through its decentralized architecture and community-focused features, though technical refinement remains necessary. Strengths include innovative feed customization and open-source framework, while limitations involve inconsistent Android performance and incomplete feature implementation. Bluesky appears most suitable for early adopters seeking algorithmic transparency and community moderation alternatives, though casual users may find current instability prohibitive for primary social networking use.

Pretty good so far, but my biggest gripe is where photos are saved. Rather than downloading to a Bluesky folder or even the downloads folder, it goes straight into camera roll, or DCIM. I shouldn't have to manually separate my downloaded pictures from my camera photos, literally no other social media service I've ever used does this. I submitted the suggestion to change it several weeks ago using your feedback service in-app, and will not give a higher rating until this is changed.

The latest update as of 1/20/2025 is broken on my phone. Scrolling stops working until I switch between tabs, and I can't interact with skeets.

I love this app a ton, it's so good and chill. My only issue is... reposts. Please Bluesky, I'm begging you to give us the ability to turn off people's reposts. There's a few people I follow that repost 50+ things and flood my timeline. I want to see their posts, but I hardly see anything I want because of it. I have so many people muted and I wish I didn't have to do that to clean my timeline. It keeps me from following new people too, honestly. Please give us the ability to turn off reposts!

I joined Bluesky shortly after its soft launch began and have been using it ever since. The app has come a long way and is under active development. I find it very easy to use and am much looking forward to future improvements (decent MFA is very high on my list). Thanks, Bluesky team!
