The Amazon Fire TV mobile app transforms Android devices into functional remote controls for Fire TV devices. It provides keyboard input, voice search, and app navigation, serving as both backup remote and primary control solution.

Detailed Review

The Amazon Fire TV mobile application serves as a secondary control interface for Amazon's streaming ecosystem, designed specifically to enhance the user experience with Fire TV devices. This free Android application positions itself as both an emergency replacement for lost remotes and a complementary control method that leverages smartphone capabilities not available on physical remotes. The application's core functionality centers around five key areas: voice-enabled search (though geographically limited), simplified navigation controls, media playback management, virtual keyboard implementation, and quick application launching. The keyboard feature proves particularly valuable for text entry tasks such as search queries and password input, eliminating the tedious process of selecting individual characters using directional buttons. Navigation mirrors the physical remote's directional pad while adding swipe gestures for smoother menu browsing. User experience demonstrates thoughtful design with large, clearly labeled buttons and intuitive layout organization. The interface maintains visual consistency with the Fire TV ecosystem while optimizing for touchscreen interactions. Real-world usage patterns show the app frequently serving as either a primary control method for users repurposing old smartphones or as a temporary solution during remote malfunctions or misplacements. The requirement for multicast-enabled routers ensures stable connectivity but may limit compatibility with older network hardware. User feedback consistently highlights reliability and convenience, with multiple reviews praising its performance as a remote substitute. Mark J (2025-07-12) noted the advantage of not requiring battery changes when using old phones as dedicated controllers. However, sachin boob (2025-07-12) identified the notable absence of volume control functionality present on physical remotes. Latoya Williams (2025-07-12) exemplified common use cases where financial constraints made the app preferable to purchasing replacement hardware. The application demonstrates strongest utility as either a backup solution or for users seeking enhanced text input capabilities. Its limitations include dependency on network infrastructure and lack of hardware control features like volume adjustment. The app excels in scenarios requiring frequent text entry or when physical remotes become unavailable, though it cannot fully replace all hardware remote functions in its current iteration.

Key Features

  • Virtual keyboard enables rapid text entry for searches and login fields, eliminating tedious character-by-character selection
  • Voice search functionality allows hands-free content discovery where available, though regional restrictions apply
  • Playback controls provide full media management including play, pause, skip, and rewind functions
  • Application launcher offers one-touch access to installed apps and games without navigating menus
  • Directional navigation replicates physical remote functionality with added touchscreen swipe gestures
  • Device compatibility works across Fire TV sticks, cubes, and smart TVs running Fire OS

seems to work like intented. I misplaced my remote and am happy I was able to find an app to use in the meantime while I look for it. I have two separate remotes for my TV, one for power/volume/settings and the other for my fire stick as my TV is almost as old as me so this app works as a great replaced for the physical one

working good. But it lacks the volume control feature which is present in the physical remote control.
