Babbel Review: Finally, a Language App That Explains the 'Why'

by Babbel GmbH

If you’ve tried other language apps and felt like something was missing, Babbel might be your answer. It’s built around real conversational skills and actually explains grammar and usage in a way that sticks. Perfect for learners who want to move beyond phrase memorization and understand how the language works.

My Full Experience

I’ve been using Babbel for Spanish over the past few months, and what stands out is how it balances structure with practicality. The lessons are short—around 10–15 minutes—but they pack in vocabulary, grammar, speaking practice, and cultural tips without feeling overwhelming. The speech recognition is pretty accurate, and I love that it includes dialogues based on real-life situations, like ordering in a restaurant or asking for directions. One thing users consistently mention is how Babbel explains the reasoning behind language rules. Unlike some apps that just throw phrases at you, Babbel breaks down why certain verb forms or word orders are used. That’s huge for actually retaining what you learn. It’s not perfect—some users note that the app doesn’t always resume exactly where you left off, and pronunciation feedback could be more granular. Also, while it covers 14 languages, popular choices like Japanese aren’t available yet. But for European languages especially, it’s a standout. The inclusion of review sessions and podcasts for intermediate learners adds nice depth. If you’re serious about learning a language and want a clear, logical path, Babbel delivers.

I am learning Spanish and think Babbel. Is an excellent tool. Study Babbel and then practice as much as possible. Speaking to others in your language of study. It could be nice to go back to previous lessons. Nice but… It could be nice to go back to previous lessons.

This app is amazing!!! I’m learning French, which as you probably know is not the easiest language to learn. I’ve used other language apps such as Rosetta Stone and Duolingo, but Babble is by far the best!! A big factor for me especially when learning something like a language is the aesthetic of the app and/or website. I love the appearance of the Babble site! It’s a nice, calming, chill aesthetic ideal for language learning! Babble also provides many different ways of learning the same language! You can listen, write, speak, and even use digital flash cards of words and phrases. Babble provides you with daily vocabulary reviews, and keeps you motivated by giving you a learning streak. You can take your time with Babble. I don’t feel pressured to go fast and do a bunch of lessons. The lessons are short, the longest taking 30mins to complete. Similar to other language apps, Babble uses pictures to help you visually learn words and phrases. It divides your learning based on your knowledge of the language. For example, I started learning French a month ago, so Babble put me at Newcomer level 1. When you sign up you can select what level of learning you’re at, and let them know your goals.(learning to fluency, writing the language, grammar, speaking) Overall, Babble is a fantastic app!! I would absolutely recommend getting it! Au revoir! 🥐🇫🇷🥖 Great app!! ⭐️🌟💫✨ This app is amazing!!! I’m learning French, which as you probably know is not the easiest language to learn. I’m on my second day of lessons. So far, very good! Easy to start grasping concepts and Babbel keeps you engaged with other supplemental material. Great Start I’m on my second day of lessons. I love this app so much. I’ve been wanting to learn Spanish my whole life and this is way easier than trying to just learn it from friends or family or something like that.
